rpa:architecture converts 1920s hotel into luxury homes - 30/09/2008
Leading architect, rpa:architecture adds to their strong portfolio by working hand-in-hand with Explore Living to redevelop the landmark Grand Ocean Hotel to create 289 homes near Brighton.
The former Butlins Hotel is being restored sympathetically and will retain the hotel's iconic art deco façade whist incorporating four newly built blocks of apartments. The new apartments will be in keeping with the character of building and some will benefit from the beautifully restored features of the Grade II listed grand Ballroom.
rpa:architecture enjoys a long standing and successful relationship with Explore Living, and has been working with them on this intricate three year project since planning approval in 2006.
The complex post planning role includes any adaptations of the design to planning conditions, construction drawings and the position of site architect.
The redevelopment and conversion of the magnificent 1920s art deco building drew on all the technical skills and experience of the rpa:architecture team, especially as the working drawings have had to take into account the period of the existing buildings as well as the effect of the local maritime conditions on any new structures.
rpa:architecture's Managing Director Martin Playford comments: "Our expertise in redeveloping period properties has been recognised by Explore Living's decision to choose to work with us and adds to our extensive portfolio. Together we have ensured the drawings for the apartments are sensitive to the classic art deco style the hotel has been famed for since it opened in the 1920s. rpa:architecture enjoys an outstanding reputation for delicately reviving these stunning period properties and creating spectacular new luxury homes for discerning buyers."
